Sounds fun, no? It is, for a short while. Even when you're on foot, if you fight close enough to the rig you can benefit from added information on your heads-up display (HUD), including red markers to see where the enemies are on the map. The developers at Spark Unlimited did a great job building up the significance of the rig, so when you finally enter it, you feel like it's a big deal.
Peyton can also climb into his Utility Rig, a 40-foot 'mech, to shoot down enemies from a first-person perspective. Ranging from a knife and rifle to a grenade launcher and Pneumatic Injector Gun (which shoots metal rivets), you'll complete various missions - such as find this and fix that - while staying alive as long as possible. Later on in the game, you'll face off against rival human soldiers. You'll wield a number of weapons to ward off the insect-like creatures, collectively referred to as Akrid (pronounced "Ache-rid"). When Peyton traipses through the planet's frozen tundra and ice caves, the action is played from a third-person perspective. The story is told through in-game story sequences and non-interactive cut-scene sequences, both of which offer excellent voice acting and in-time lip-syncing.

You play as Jim Peyton, a contractor for the Neo-Venus Construction (NEVEC) company, tasked with mining the planet's valuable energy source. And there are other assorted issues, such as less-than-stellar artificial intelligence (A.I.).Īs with its predecessors, Lost Planet 3 is an action-heavy adventure that drops you onto the windy and icy planet of E.D.N. Problem is, the single-player campaign grows repetitive after a short while - both in gameplay and environments.
Keeping in mind the old adage that you only get one chance to make a good first impression, Lost Planet 3 delivers an incredible first hour or so of play.įrom the excellent story introduction and convincing performances to sharp graphics and gripping action, this third game in Capcom's 7-year-old series gets it mostly right.
